What is Bulletproof Coffee?

In the last few years, the term bulletproof coffee has made some major headlines. Health-conscious communities everywhere have been buzzing about this new product and the miraculous health benefits it claims to have. Even those who have yet to venture down the road of better health, have probably heard and known a little bit about bulletproof coffee. But as with any new trend, it’s important to know the background and details about it before trying it out.

Bulletproof coffee is more than just a simple cup of black coffee. Although drinking a cup of standard black coffee a day has been proven to have its own numerous health benefits. Yes, it’s true! Black coffee can be a great addition to your morning routine. Uncertain about ditching the milk and sugar? If you find you are already raising your eyebrows and pursing your lips at the thought of taking your coffee black, then you should check out another one of our articles on The Top 10 Benefits of Black Coffee. It’s actually better than you think!

Black coffee and bulletproof coffee are both similar and different. Black coffee literally has nothing in it. Bulletproof, on the other hand, does. But it’s not what you may think! Forget the milk, cream, and sugar. Just like a cup of black coffee, bulletproof coffee has none of these typical coffee additions. Because in reality, those are the added ingredients that are counter-productive to good health. It’s not necessarily the coffee itself but what we so often put in it.

Bulletproof coffee was a product conceived and created initially by David Asprey, a self-made bio-hacker from the San Francisco Bay area. Asprey’s ultimate goal is to be superhuman and live to the ripe old age of one hundred and eighty. This is a man who is into cryogenics, keto style eating habits and a million and one ways to up the performance of the holy grail of human health, our gut health -the mitochondria. With all this in mind, he sought to and succeeded in creating a new way to start the day. According to his findings, it’s about ditching the croissants, eggs, and vanilla lattes in the morning and having a simple cup of this magic bulletproof potion.

The founder and creator of bulletproof coffee believes that drinking this new substance is a crucial step in getting on board the healthy lifestyle train. The benefits of bulletproof coffee have been said and, in many cases proven, to aid in suppressing appetite and therefore dropping unnecessary weight, upping physical and mental performance, and having a clear and energetic approach to everything you take on each day.

But like any new trend in health, it’s important to know the facts before you jump in and immerse yourself in a new approach. So, let’s start at the beginning and work our way through the following important questions.

  • What exactly is bulletproof coffee?
  • What will it do for you?
  • And of course, the ultimate question. Is it really as good for you as it claims to be?

Bulletproof coffee is defined as a drink that consists of brewed coffee, grass-fed unsalted butter or ghee, and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) coconut oil. MCT is a high octane coconut oil. Unsure about what that is? Want to know more about MCT? Check out this article What is MCT and its Health Benefits?

And yes, you read that right. Butter. In your coffee. No sugar, no milk, no cream, or chocolate sprinkles on top. So, by the sound of it, bulletproof coffee must taste awful, right? Well, actually, most people who have tried bulletproof coffee most often report that it tastes delicious, although there is no dairy or sugar in it. And no, they don’t report feeling like they sucked on a stick of butter.

So how is this possible? It’s all in the way it’s made.

Let’s start by dropping the visual image of a cup of black coffee with a square of butter melting into it. This is organic, mold-free coffee beans, organic grass-fed butter or ghee (a type of highly clarified butter), and the MCT (coconut oil) that are blended together until it creates a frothy, latte coloured drink that tastes just as creamy as your favourite barista’s best concoction! Really? So…if it looks like a latte and smells like a latte, is it still a latte? No. In this case, it is most certainly not. It’s better than a traditional latte!

So now that we know what it is, let’s discuss what it can do for you.

First of all, it’s important to note that bulletproof coffee should be used as a meal replacement. Drinking a cup of bulletproof coffee is something you want to do instead of eating breakfast. Why? Because if you’re adding this drink to a carb-loaded breakfast, it will not be able to work to its maximum effect, and it will be adding too many calories to your morning meal.

When used correctly, the effects of this incredible drink are:

  • Improved mental clarity
  • High energy
  • Suppressed appetite and subsequent weight loss

These are all reasons why bulletproof coffee is touted as such a great addition to a healthy lifestyle and ultimately, an incredible bio-hack.

How does bulletproof coffee give you better mental clarity and energy, one might wonder? These are, after all, pretty high claims to make. Well, it’s all in the way your body fuels up. When the human body is running on carbohydrates and ultimately sugar, it has a quick spike of energy, followed by a crash of lethargy and mental fog. However, when you train the body to run on ketones or fat, the opposite occurs. Clarity and energy come in quickly, and they stay longer.

Obviously, when first limiting and ultimately eliminating carbs and sugars, the body first goes through a state of withdrawal. However, on the other side of that withdrawal period, is a physical level, unlike any other. It’s called ketosis. Benefits include weight loss, feeling more energetic, and mental clarity. All the same benefits bulletproof coffee! Drinking a cup of bulletproof coffee in the morning helps your body to access its fuel via ketones instead of sugar. As we now know, running on ketones means the body is in a state of ketosis, which is what some like to call it the “superhuman level” that permits us to operate at our best!

This is also why bulletproof coffee is trendy and conducive to following a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet like Paleo and Keto. The goal of these diets is to put the body into ketosis and keep it there, using fat for fuel. Want to more about why a keto diet can be a healthy choice for you? Here’s a great source

So now that we know how it works, the question remains is it really good for you? Yes and no. In order for the answer to be a resounding yes, you must be doing it correctly.

First and as previously mentioned, it’s crucial that you replace your current daily breakfast with a cup of bulletproof coffee and not add it in. And it’s also important to first ensure that you don’t have high cholesterol issues. Slogging back a tablespoon of butter a day will not help those cholesterol and saturated fat levels, not to mention calories.

This is why the health concepts behind bulletproof coffee rely on the assumption that you are already a relatively healthy person, and you are replacing breakfast with bulletproof coffee, not adding it in. So, if you have high cholesterol, it may be better to start with cutting junk food and other carbs and sugars, along with adding more vegetables to your diet first. Then when you have more stable cholesterol levels, switching over from eating breakfast to fueling up with a cup of bulletproof coffee will be easier and healthier for you.

Also, it’s important to note that MCT oil, can for some people, have a harsh effect on the stomach. Many people who have tried it have suggested starting small and slowly leading up to the recommended tablespoon per cup. This is not unreasonable at all. Like most dietary changes, little baby steps are easier to handle and maintain long term.

So overall, if done correctly, the answer is a resounding YES! Bulletproof coffee can be perfect for your health because it helps the body to run on ketones. Bulletproof coffee is an excellent addition to a keto or paleo lifestyle. And even for those who are not following such regimented health plans but just prefer to have a simpler low carb diet. This incredible drink provides an opportunity for the body to fuel up first thing in the morning and run on fat, not sugar, which, as we outlined above, only brings with it the inevitable mid-morning crash. Not to mention the added bonus of mental clarity and higher energy levels that bulletproof coffee provides for more extended periods!

So, what are you waiting for? You’ve read the research and heard all the feedback. It’s time to get out there and try some bulletproof coffee for yourself! And, when ingested in combination with a low carb or full-blown keto/paleo diet, the effects are genuinely deserving of its bio-hack description. Improved mental clarity, heightened energy levels, and weight loss are all great reasons to pour yourself a cup and join this incredible health movement!
