This magic solution is called bulletproof coffee, and it may just be what you’ve been looking for! If you feel like you’re struggling to get through the day as well as struggling with your weight and energy levels, then bulletproof coffee could be the answer for you. Let’s start with a quick overview of how bulletproof came to be: 

Basically, the term bulletproof coffee was coined by Dave Asprey, a man who describes himself as a professional bio-hacker. His story is pretty incredible, but it all comes down to this…bulletproof coffee is a mix of high quality, organic coffee, ghee or grass-fed butter and MCT oil. Now…is this coffee really the superpower that it claims to be? We believe it is! When you combine the superpowers of pure Arabica coffee beans, ghee, and MCT oil, you get one fantastic high-performance, high-fat, and supercharged latte! Is that all that goes into a bulletproof coffee recipe? Does it matter what type of ingredients you use? Yes! Yes! And yes again! Read on to learn more! 

First of all, let’s talk about using the right type of coffee in your bulletproof coffee recipe. 

The Arabica plant is a delicate and slower growing plant. It only grows in high altitudes of cool, subtropical climates, needs rich, moist soil and many other specifics to make it grow. The elevation is one of the most important factors when growing the plants that will produce Arabica beans. Typically, this means an altitude of 800 to 2200 meters. The flavour is more complex, and depending on the elevation, the slower the growth of the plants. All of this results in a premium product that is being developed. 

Like many things, the more special care needed to produce the end result, the higher the quality that the end result is. The same is true for coffee beans. Arabica started out as the best the world had seen and still is today, the highest quality coffee bean on the market. This is why gourmet coffees are almost always made from high-quality arabica coffee beans. Some of those premium beans include coffee beans from Columbia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Ethiopia, and the blue mountains of Jamaica-but more on where they can be found later. Now, what about that grass-fed butter? Or ghee? What is ghee anyway? 

Okay, so grass-fed butter is easy to understand because it means exactly what it sounds like. Butter made from the milk of grass-fed cows. Pretty simple right? And obvious? Aren’t cows supposed to eat grass? Well, yes, they are. But in the standard commercial dairy industry, they don’t. In fact, the conditions for these cows are pretty awful. They are restricted to overcrowded barns and fed a grain feed filled with hormones and other chemicals. Guess what ends up in your milk and butter after that process? Not hard to figure out. 

This is why it’s essential to use grass-fed butter. Happy cows, foraging for their own food in a grassy field as nature intended them to make much better and much healthier butter for humans. Grass-fed butter contains hundreds of fatty acids and way more conjugated linoleic acid (also known as CLA) than butter made from grain-fed cows. CLA is a naturally occurring fatty acid found in animal products like meat and dairy. It’s a great dietary supplement that aids in weight loss and muscle mass retention. 

Now, ghee. You can buy it in a store, but once you’re buying grass-fed butter, it’s almost easier and cheaper just to make your own ghee. Ghee is basically clarified butter, and it is a product that has been revered in the Middle East and India for centuries. So first off, start out with grass-fed butter then melt it in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Once it’s melted, you will see three layers. Foam on top clarified butter in the middle and milk solids at the bottom. Scoop off the top and slightly burn the bottom so that you can strain out the clarified butter or ghee. 

Time to learn about MCT oil! MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides, and it’s been proven to be one of the most amazing forms of energy for the human body. MCT oil is extracted from coconut oil. It’s an ideal source of energy because of how quickly the body absorbs it. Coconut oil can be used in a pinch, but MCT oil is a by-product of coconut oil and not really interchangeable. This is because coconut oil has 55% MCT’s, but MCT oil is pure 100% of the good stuff. 

Why is this MCT oil so good for the body? Well, it has many health benefits. It aids in weight loss because it fills you up, satiating your body for more extended periods. It also boosts your metabolism, which leads to helping your body run on ketosis. This is why bulletproof coffee and its ingredients are so important in the keto diet. It’s the grass-fed butter or ghee that gives it it’s creamy taste and colour. 

Okay, so now it’s time to get down to business and check out an awesome bulletproof coffee recipe! No need to panic, you don’t need to be a barista to figure this out. Just follow the below instructions, and you’ll be on your way to bulletproofing your morning routine! 

What you’ll need:

  • Single-origin organic Arabica coffee beans (enough to make two cups of coffee)
  • Grinder
  • Any coffee maker like an Aeropress, French Press or Chemex -all good options.
  • Blender
  • Grass-fed butter or ghee (enough for two tablespoons)
  • MCT oil 

Step by step plan:

Grind the beans and make your coffee. Be sure to make enough for two cups.

Add two tablespoons of grass-fed butter or ghee.

Add one to two tablespoons (start small) of MCT oil.

Blend for about thirty seconds and then…ENJOY!
